Struggling Bristol Rovers completed a league double over promotion-chasing Bury thanks to Robert Quinn's 64th minute goal.
In a match low on quality, Quinn produced a moment of skill to fire past Glynn Garner from 12 yards although the goal stemmed from an initial mistake by veteran defender Steve Redmond.
Bury tried their best to at least salvage a point from a poor display and leading scorer Jon Newby was denied his first goal of 2003 by a smart save from Scott Howie.
Teenager David Nugent, on as a second-half substitute for last Saturday's match winner Colin Cramb, was not too far wide with a powerful 25-yard effort.
However, Bury created only a handful of chance against a resolute Rovers defence in which Kevin Austin was outstanding.
"He was a man mountain," said Rovers boss Ray Graydon after the game.
"It's great to win at last because we've drawn too many matches.
"We've also made some silly mistakes and our aim tonight was to make it was tough as possible for Bury. Now we've got to try and build on this result at home to Shrewsbury on Saturday." Bury travel to leaders Hartlepool on Friday with manager Andy Preece admitting: "I just don't know how the players are going to come out and perform.
"And it's so frustrating as a manager. They've got to show though that they really want it and tonight we had too many players below par."
