Craig Disley publicly declared he was looking for his first goal since joining Bristol Rovers from Mansfield in the summer.
Inside three minutes the 23-year-old midfielder was celebrating courtesy of a spilled save by Wayne Brown.
The Chester keeper failed to hold a shot from Jamie Forrester who had cut in from the left after a speedy break and Disley pounced for an eager tap in.
Scoring has never been his strong point - just 16 in 141 games for Mansfield - but it was an important goal for Rovers.
It was their first goal in over 4.5 hours of league football but the lead came under threat inside a minute when Kevin Ellison came through into a good shooting position in front of goal only to send a sharp effort over the bar.
There were scoring chances for Chester's Kevin Rapley and Forrester, but it was the goalkeepers who had critical roles as Rovers regained their confidence after a long unproductive spell.
They were flattered by the winning margin as Chester's sense of purpose always made them a danger.
Ellison brought them level just short of the half hour mark, seizing on a header out of defence to whip in a low shot which was in the back of the net before Kevin Miller in the home goal even moved.
But the decisive error came on half time when Brown hauled down Forrester for a penalty.
Forrester thumped it high into the net to give Rovers back an initiative they were never to lose again.
Phil Bolland sent a header just over the top as Chester began the second half strongly but the game soon swayed firmly to Rovers.
After Stephen Vaughan had cleared off the line from Disley, Lee Thorpe made the game safe for Rovers on 71 minutes.
And then a good cross from the ever dangerous Dave Savage saw substitute Paul Trollope confirm the home side's biggest win of the season three minutes later.
