Jordan Rhodes rifled home from the edge of the box after only five minutes to score the winner but then saw a 54th-minute penalty saved by Conrad Logan.
Yet stand-in referee Chris Powell, who was forced to take over the whistle after Brendon Malone was forced off injured in the 75th minute, found himself embroiled in late controversy in the closing stages after a long throw from James Tunnicliffe was palmed into his own net by Alex Smithies.
Powell ruled there had been a push on the goalkeeper but Rovers midfielder Campbell, who has been given the manager's job until the end of the season, said: "If anything Smithies was shoved in the back by one of his own team-mates.
"It was a hugely disappointing decision for us because Huddersfield were hanging on at the time. I am not sure about the offside at the end but I know we deserved something from the game because we matched one of the best sides in our division.
"The support we received was fantastic and our fans deserved an equaliser as much as the players did. If we continue to show that spirit we can still get out of trouble."
